[00:00:00] Hey. Hey. This is Shawna a and you're listening to delightful audio sodes, the email audio newsletter where I share tips, tricks, and insights about building your side hustle as a helping professional. Here's the show. Now, today I wanted to talk specifically about imposter syndrome and how that is showing up and holding us back. In order to talk more about this, I am going to bring us back a couple of months. And now, I don't know if you've been on TikTok, but a couple of months ago on TikTok, when they were really, really, really pushing out the TikTok shop, and, like, literally every other video felt like it was a video for the TikTok shop. One of the viral videos was for a notebook. And I swear, I just saw this notebook for weeks. It might have not been that long, but that's what it felt like for me. And if you know what I'm talking about, this notebook was a notebook on shadow work. Now, when I had started to do my research, because people were like, this notebook was changing their lives and it was amazing. I wanted to know more about what is shadow work? Where did this come from, the insights on it, all of that. And upon just doing a little bit of digging on TikTok, I learned that the person of that viral notebook was not a clinician. Now, before we get upset, I want to let you know that there is nothing wrong with a non clinical professional writing books or putting out information around how to do a certain thing right. Self help notebooks have been written for eons at this point by people who are not in the clinical field. And there's nothing wrong with that, because that is based off of their experiences and anecdotal. And it's always good to get information from multiple places.
[00:02:04] So there's nothing wrong with that. When I say that it's not written by a clinician, I say that because there are so many clinicians out there who have the knowledge, the skills, the experience, who are doing this work day in and day out, who could never fathom writing a book. Why can't they fathom writing a book? Because they have it in their minds that this is something that is impossible and that this something that is really difficult, or that the quote, unquote proper channels is not accessible to them. When really to create a workbook, to create a journal, to create a coloring book, can be quite a simple process. We have to learn how to get out of our own ways, because oftentimes we think that we need to have more credentials. We feel that we have to have more, more, more in order to produce simple things that people are producing out here with less, less, way less. And I think having those knowledges, having those skills, having the expertise is a part that we can offer with our own signature pieces of discussion and our own signature programs. But we have to learn how to get out of our own way. We have to learn how to put something out there and say, this is from what I know, and it's okay if you've got something else from what you know, because there's space at the table for us all.
[00:03:51] Largely, this is imposter syndrome at play. When we feel like we don't have enough to do the things that we really can do. It's imposter syndrome. A way that I see this often is with therapists who are like, what certifications do I have to get to be a coach?
[00:04:08] What do you mean?
[00:04:10] You are a clinician.
[00:04:12] What certifications do you need to do the work that you're already doing as a clinician at a higher level at that. Now, not all clinicians are good clinicians. So I'm not talking about the people that are saying some certain things and not doing their research or those kinds of things. I am talking about the people who, who are intentional and thoughtful and really care about the work that they are doing, who really understand the nuances, the ins and outs of this field. You are actively utilizing skills that allow for you to cross over into different realms. And I can understand saying, like, you know what? I just want more information. I'm going to take a CEU or two just to see, you know, how I can utilize these different informations, how I can make sure that I'm doing what's right for my license. That's totally different than putting yourself back into a position where you have to now take another test, where you have to become certified to do the work that you already know how to do.
[00:05:25] There is a difference than letting our minds put us in a place where we feel like we are not enough, where we feel like we don't have the skills when you do.
[00:05:40] So I want you to think about this. When it comes to your work, when it comes to building side hustles, what are the skills? What is the knowledge? What is the expertise that you have? Write it down, look at it, examine it. Why do people come to you?
[00:06:02] How can you offer this as a way to help? Because this is the foundation of your side hustle, and this is what you're going to go back to. Whenever that voice in your mind creeps up and says, hey, you don't have enough to do what you need to do. And if at some point you come up against a barrier that truly is you don't have the things that you need, how can you go about getting those things you need without going the longest path possible?
[00:06:35] How can we do this in a way that allows for us to access the things that we are looking to access on a small scale and then later expand out? You have the capability of writing your own notebooks. You have the capability of writing your own journals. You have the skills. You just have to be able to access them and quell the voice in your mind that says that you need more. Hey. Hey. This is Shawna A. Thank you so much for listening in today. I want you to do your homework. Make sure that you check in on those skills, knowledge and experience. Whether you're a therapist or not. Anytime that you're starting up a side hustle, you want to go back, remind yourself of who you are and what you've accomplished thus far towards the work that you're already doing. This is going to help when you're building social proof, as well as quelling the voice that says that you are not enough, because you absolutely are and you absolutely have what it takes.
